From ritual to must-have: Why we love slippers

Hardly are we home than we slip into our favourite slippers - a small everyday ritual that combines protection, warmth and a sense of security. But behind this feel-good moment lies a long history: from early on, people sought comfortable, hygienic and warming footwear for within their own four walls. Whether mules or cabin slippers - the variety is vast. An intriguing question concerns the very beginnings: did open-back mules evolve first, or did higher-cut house slippers lead the way? One thing is certain: our need for comfort and relaxation has made slippers indispensable companions of modern everyday life.

Historically, slippers are closely linked to “normal” footwear. Nomadic peoples made early prototypes from natural materials; in Egypt, straw and leaves were used - later, leather was added. Interestingly, slippers from the 2nd century were found in Egyptian tombs. Wool was also a favourite in antiquity: breathable, durable and temperature-regulating - qualities that still win people over today. Among the Romans, the soccus, a heelless, mule-like shoe, was very popular. From the 15th century onwards, slippers spread across Europe; at first they were worn mainly by women - a trend that soon became democratised.

Many names, one feeling: in German-speaking regions they are called Schlapfen, Schluffen, Finken or Babuschen - the latter comes via French from the Arabic “Bābūsch” for footwear. Idioms such as “Pantoffelheld” also show how deeply slippers are rooted in everyday life. Internationally, there are fascinating habits: in Japan you’ll often find special toilet slippers. And while terms change - for example, the historical definition of slippers with a closed heel - one constant remains: wool as the ideal fibre. It keeps you warm, is breathable and ensures a balanced climate - the perfect basis for modern feel-good slippers.
