No to mulesing
OUR PROMISE FOR MULESING-FREE MERINO WOOL
Merino wool is soft, temperature-regulating, water and dirt repellent, antistatic, crease-resistant and does not develop unpleasant odours - THE all-rounder, so to speak. In addition to being more comfortable to wear than other types of wool, Merino wool is 100% natural and sustainable.
But behind this versatile fibre lies an issue that not everyone is aware of: mulesing.
WHAT IS MULESING?
Mulesing is a procedure in which excess skin is removed from the hindquarters of lambs without anaesthetic to prevent fly infestation. Although this method is used in some regions, particularly in Australia, it is highly controversial as it is extremely painful for the animals. Fly maggots, which can cause serious infections and even death in sheep, are only a problem in certain regions of the world.
Are there alternatives?
Yes, there are alternatives! Farmers and researchers are constantly trying to find alternatives, such as the use of insecticides or multiple shearing of the rump. Some sheep farmers rely on anaesthetised procedures or on breeding sheep breeds that have fewer skin folds and are therefore less susceptible to fly infestation.
Our responsibility: Mulesing-free merino wool for GIESSWEIN
At Giesswein, we attach great importance to animal welfare and therefore only use Merino wool from Australia and Uruguay, which is guaranteed to be mulesing-free. Our partners in Australia rely on innovative and animal-friendly methods of fly control, such as breeding sheep that are less susceptible to fly infestation. The entire supply chain is regularly audited and we work closely with our suppliers to ensure that the highest animal welfare standards are met.
We have signed contracts with all our partners that guarantee the supply of mulesing-free wool. For us, the respectful treatment of animals is not just a matter of course, but a responsibility that we take seriously.
